I haven't canoed the Buffalo since Boy Scouts around 1977, but am now thinking of trying to take the family there. Since I was one of the more experienced canoeists, I was given a brand new kids in my canoe. A friend of mine that was also a pretty good canoeist was given a new kid. The river had been pretty smooth and easy until we came around bend and found a quick current headed for a large tree hanging over the water. My friend had just run his canoe into the tree and was hanging onto the tree. I told my partner to paddle hard to help me avoid the tree. He got scared and just sat there. Needless to say we hit the tree on the side of the canoe. I was about to get out of it, when my young partner got scared and decided to just up into the tree limbs - of course by stepping on the upstream side of the canoe, which subsequently dumped the canoe under the tree. So there we were, my friend and I literally stuck on the slimy upstream side of the tree in the water with this young kid hanging in the branches screaming. We were laughing at our predicament. I was able to get another canoe to come get the youngster and then told them t head downstream to find my canoe. My friend and I dove under the tree to get off it (I wouldn't recommend a move like this) and then free floated down river to where they had finally caught our canoe, laughing the entire way.

That's crazy!! There are spots that can be dangerous, but most spills just end up being funny!
