DGF - I went and scouted out Yellow Creek upstream from 13 at Tatums and at 49/46. Talked to the owner of the store at 49 / 46 about parking there, he was real nice. Think I'm gonna do a trip where I put in at 49/46 and float down to 13 and camp at a guys place I've got permission to put-in at there if he doesn't care and then float on down to 149 the next day and take out..
Also scouted a new creek which dumps into the Harpeth - Turnbull Creek. It looks promising as well.
Looks like plenty of water right now in all the creeks I've looked at. Hopefully we will have more water for floating this year than last, I think we will..
You scouted any new places ?

Shoal Creek is in Southwest TN. near Lawrenceburg and Iron City TN. and runs down into Alabama. Here is a link to a outfitter in Iron City - www.shoalcreekcanoerun.com/They rent canoes & kayaks and also shuttle private canoes. We do some geocaching as well and will probaly hunt some of the geocaches along the creek on our trip.. Exactly what parts of the Duck have you paddled ? We were thinking of doing canoe camping trip from around Centerville to close to where the Duck empties into the TN. River sometime.. Ever paddled this part ?

Well so far this year I have paddled Yellow Creek, the Harpeth, the Red River, and White Oak Creek (small local creek)..
My favorite was probaly Yellow Creek, but they all have their own unique qualities.
Plan on doing a 2 night canoe camping run on Shoal Creek the weekend before Labor Day.
Anybody here ever paddled Shoal Creek ?

DGF - Thanks for the info ..
The book says that the creek upstream from Hwy. 13 is too shallow to canoe in summer, do you agree with this ? After we do this 1st trip and we like it we may decide to put-in a little farther upstream.. Is there any certain place to put-in or section of the creek you like better than the rest ?
Thanks again, Terry

About Yellow Creek - I learned of this creek from the book 'Canoeing in Tennessee' by Holly Sherwin and me and a group of friends were planning on floating Yellow Creek this Memorial weekend.
I know about the put-in at the bridge on Hwy. 13 - my question was whether permission was needed or in other words if anybody was gonna holler at us for trespassing if we park 2 or 3 vehicles off the road there next to the bridge ? If we do need to get permission, who owns it ? Will anyone downstream give us any problems about trespassing either ? I've had this problem in the past on other creeks is why I ask..
We are planning on taking out at the boat ramp next to Hwy. 149 so I'm not worried about the vehicle at the take-out.
Also have you ever put-in anywhere further upstream from Hwy. 13 ?
Just looking for any advice from someone who has already floated it.
Thanks in advance - Terry

Me and probaly some buddies would be up for this, but someone else could probaly do better suggesting camp spots. I know the Buffalo has several campgrounds with facilities, the Harpeth probaly has at least a couple as well as the Duck and I'm sure a primitive spot wouldn't be hard to find on any of them, esp. the Duck. It just depends on what sections of each.. Maybe someone will suggest a few places and we can decide on one of them. I was hoping someone would reply to my overnight Harpeth post cause I've only did the narrows and would like to see a lot more of the river.

Anyone know any places you can legally park a car overnight on the Harpeth and not have to worry about it getting broken into or anything ?
The state areas won't let you park overnight, at least it is posted on the sign at The Narrows and at Newsom's Mill.
Want to do an overnight trip without messing with the outfitters if possible.
Also any recommended camping spots ?
Thanks..

I'm looking for anyone who knows anything about different sections of the Duck River..
I went and looked at the Duck back in the summer at a take-out mentioned from someone who does camping trips on the Duck and the water was murky, muddy (not my cup of tea for paddling) and there hadn't been any rain so I figure that is how it normally stays.. This is pretty close to Hwy. 13 and Loretta Lynn's and not far from where it dumps into Kentucky Lake / TN. River. I know the Duck is a state scenic river in Maury county so I figure it is clear running upstream at some point.
My question is, does anyone know how far upstream before it is clear ?
Does anyone know what it looks like at Centerville for example ?
I wanted to figure out a trip on the Duck closer to home than the Columbia / Maury Co. area.
Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks - Terry

I'm always looking for someone to do trips with, especially if they have done trips I haven't.
Me and some buddies do trips from spring till fall when it's not too cold to be in the water, but you would be welcome to join us.
I live in Paris and usually go to Yellow Creek, Harpeth, Buffalo, and White Oak Creek but I'm looking to try some new trips this year too.
Where do you float ?

I called them back last summer about getting them to shuttle one canoe & rent another for a canoe-camping trip and the guy was a grade-a smarta$$. They have overnight trips listed for up to 4 nights and I had asked how many miles on the river the typical 2 and 3 night trips were and he was like " I can't read your mind you have to tell me how many miles you want to do." So I told him I assumed they had a normal put-in and take-out spot for the different trips and I just wanted to know the mileage for where they usually put people in & out for the 2 and 3 night trips and again very rudely he replied " I have 2 mile trips or I have much longer trips, I don't know what you want. " So I told him I was pretty sure no one would spend a 3 night trip floating 2 miles of the river and then he tells me something like " well I don't know you - you might .." At this point I just gave up and decided I wouldn't ever give them any kind of business at all, and I won't..

Here is a map online with some put-in and take-out info.. www.buffalocanoeing.com/buffalo%20river%20map.jpgYou also might want to check out the book 'Canoeing in Tennessee' by Holly Sherwin and also ' Paddling around Nashville- 37 Kayaking & Canoeing Trips in Middle Tennessee' by Patty Shultz. They include put-in and take-out info for different trips on many different rivers including the Buffalo and include maps of the river sections. Are you wanting to camp at campgrounds with facilities or just primitive camp on the side of the river ? Terry

I want to highly recommend this book -
Paddling around Nashville- 37 Kayaking & Canoeing Trips in Middle Tennessee by Patty Shultz
I got my copy of the book from Amazon for about $20 including shipping.
I like it as well or better than Holly Sherwin's Canoeing in Tennessee. It is laid out close to the same way but the Nashville book is a little better.
The best part is it has several creeks I haven't heard of and it also lays out several different trips on the same rivers.
For example a partial list of creeks and rivers - 2 trips on the West Fork Stones River 2 trips on the East Fork Stones River 7 trips on the Harpeth 2 trips on the Duck 3 trips on the Piney River 2 trips on Jones Creek 3 trips on Big Swan Creek 2 trips on Cane Creek
Also has trips on J Percy Priest and Old Hickory Lakes.
The Jones Creek looks very interesting to me, it is close to D ickson (language filter had thingyson lol) and Ashland City (which isn't a bad trip for me) and is a tributary to the Harpeth which could make for a good extended trip to do some canoe camping.
Anybody here ever paddled Jones Creek ?

I'm always beating the bushes to find someone to go on canoe trips with me, particularly to creeks that have no outfitters so you must have your own canoe or kayak.
I'm sure I'm not the only one with this problem so I wondered how much interest ya'll think there would be in a paddling club in the West TN. area.. The trips wouldn't have to be just West TN. or anything and it would be just an informal group of people with a common interest - no rules, dues, officers, etc. - just a way to communicate and plan outings..
What does everyone think ? Would there be enough interested people in this area ? Let me know what you think ..

I've been planning a canoe camping trip from Friday 8-24 to Sunday 8-26 to Shoal Creek near Iron City, TN. but my paddling buddy may not be able to go so I thought I would post an invite here. Me and my son will be in our canoe, looking for someone else with a canoe/kayak or willing to rent one.. I may go to the Buffalo so I know other people will be around if I don't go to Shoal Creek. If anyone is interested post a reply here or hit my e-mail.
Thanks, Terry

Me and some friends are doing a 2 night canoe camping trip on Shoal Creek in Iron City, TN. the weekend before Labor Day.
Just do a search for Shoal Creek Canoe Run. They shuttle if you own your own canoe or rent if you don't.
